How to check and update your Philips Hue bulb and hub firmware

When I first got my Philips Hue bulbs, the only way to turn the lights on after shutting them down through the app would be to again use the app to power them back on. This ruins a lot of convenience if you simply walk into a room and want them back to normal.

Thankfully, they released a firmware update for the bulbs that now allows you to set a “default” state for when they get power again. It took me months to learn this, but thankfully The Verge has put together instructions on how to update your own!

I recommend everyone go check their Hue systems now so that you can make sure your security is up to date and that you’ve enabled all possible features of your bulbs.
